CNL Recertification Schedule

The CNL recertification application and guidelines are now available at http://www/aacn/nche/edu/CNC/recert.htm. Recertification applications may be submitted any time prior to the due date if the certificant meets all criteria. Certificants renewing early are not penalized by the CNC adjusting an earlier expiration – the new recertification expiration date is based upon the original expiration date. Early submission is recommended. The recertification application should be filed with CNC no later than thirty (30) days prior to the expiration. All practice hours, contact hours, and graduate course work must be earned prior to the certificate expiration date to apply towards recertification – activities towards recertification must have occurred within the five-year recertification period. CNL certification is recognized for a period of five (5) years. The actual expiration date of a CNL certificate is December 31st of the 5th complete year after certification (i.e. certification of CNLs initially certified in April 2008 expires December 31, 2013).

CNC Launches CNL Self-Assessment Examination

The Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC) is pleased to announce the new Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Self-Assessment Examination (SAE). The 40-question online SAE is a self-paced tool developed by practicing CNLs and academicians in conjunction with Applied Measurement Professionals, Inc. It is designed to familiarize you with the CNL Certification Examination - the SAE parallels the content and difficulty of the CNL Certification Examination and reflects the format of the multiple choice items. The SAE may be used by students, program directors, faculty, CNL candidates, and CNL certificants: Students may use the SAE as an additional assessment tool before completion of a CNL educational program (consultation with the program director is recommended). Program directors and faculty of CNL education programs may use the SAE to incorporate into the CNL curriculum and to enhance learning experiences. CNL candidates may use the SAE to evaluate their knowledge before taking the CNL Certification Examination. CNL certificants may use the SAE to see if they are remaining current with the profession. The cost to purchase the SAE is $50. For more information, go to http://www.aacn.nche.edu/CNC/selfassess.html or contact Tracy Lofty, CNC Director, at tlofty@aacn.nche.edu.

Volunteer with the CNC as an Item Writer

The Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC) is seeking volunteers to serve as item writers in 2010. As an item writer, you will develop test questions for the multiple choice or simulation sections of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Certification Examination. All item writers will be trained to write items and collaborate with Applied Measurement Professionals, Inc. (AMP), the contracted testing agency for the certification exam. Item writers must adhere to the guidelines provided by AMP, make every effort to meet all deadlines, update existing items as assigned, and participate in scheduled meetings. Multiple choice item writers are expected to meet with testing experts via conference calls and the internet, and write a minimum of 10 items. Simulation item writers are expected to participate in a face-to-face meeting in June or July at AMP headquarters in Kansas (expenses paid), and write one simulation item. For more information on becoming an item writer, see http://www.aacn.nche.edu/CNC/itemwriter.html
